@ EDITORS NOTES – IT'S FINALLY HERE

Dear Internet Marketer,
A year ago I dreamt about doing an IMC in Sweden ”again”, (the last one was in the year 2000) and now it’s finally here.

In a matter of days Gothenburg will be filled with Internet Marketing experts from different parts of the world. Proud local companies, together with some of the largest companies in the world, will share experiences in the field of Internet Marketing.

If you haven’t booked your ticket yet, you’ll be wise to do so! You can’t afford not to go!

Best regards,
Lennart Svanberg

@ NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD OF MARKETING

- This news-section is a compilation of online news since our last issue in October.

==> Firefox browser instead of Internet Explorer

I recently attended a seminar about Anti-phishing. One of the seminar attendees told us that as the IT-manager in a company within the Finance sector he had banned Internet Explorer.

Internet Explorer, he said, had so many security flaws that it could no longer be trusted for use on the Internet. The 40 employees now use the alternative browser Firefox instead. I asked him if they had experienced any problems with applications and the short answer was no. He knew of one site that they had problems with, but it was about to be fixed.

Firefox has now gained 10% of the browser market share. Is this a trend that Microsoft will accept?

==> Advertising 9,4 Billion US$

It's here to stay and there is no way around it. Numbers this big don't just go away, unless of course you are talking about a telecommunication company.

At this point, the industry has arrived. Representatives of this business can no longer spend time, ink, or breath on how the medium is an underdog or that if only clients and big agencies understood, then there would be more spending.

The whining will have to cease.

==> The Apprentice Factor

One team (the losing team) printed thousands of flyers and handed them out at Penn Center. They had two customers and profited $1,000. The other team, paid for an e-mail blast at the price of $1,000 to reach 27,000 members of an online bridal resource and magazine.

They even forgot to include a phone number in the e-blast, nevertheless, they had a line around the door waiting to get in as a result and profited $12,000, even though their marketing costs proved more expensive than the flyers.

==> Rich Media Is Rising Star of Online Ad

A new report from eMarketer predicts that rich media will overtake search to become the dominant form of Web advertising by the end of the decade.

Although paid search continues to dominate online advertising headlines, with Google's soaring stock price and SEO revenue numbers higher than expected, rich media is due to take its own star turn, and soon.

@ REVIEW: WHO IS "RIGHT ON THE SPOT"?

==> Right On the Spot #5 – Linus Torvalds

Linus Torvalds decided to make his own Operating System and succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. Linux, his creation, is now the operating system of choice for companies such as IBM. An incredible achievement.

Without Linux there would be no real challenger to Microsoft within the PC-world (I’m not forgetting about you Macintosh-users). Linux makes it possible to develop inexpensive software such as the Firefox browser that is freely available to the general public.

There are advantages to a proprietary system such as Microsoft’s as well as the open source system such as Linux. What I’m so ecstatic about is that we have a choice. Without Linus groundbreaking efforts, the world of computers would have been much less thrilling.

Thank’s again Linus. You’re an honourable receiver of being ”Right On The Spot #5”.

@ INTERVIEW WITH TARIQ SAIDUDDIN, CRM EVANGELIST AT STROEDE BY LENNART SVANBERG

Q: You call yourself a CRM Evangelist, why?

A: My definition of an evangelist is a person who feels that there is purpose in working with and spreading knowledge about a certain subject. For me it has been CRM as a way of doing business!

Q: Stroede, a crm-company, sponsors IMC, an Internet Marketing Conference, why?

A: For us at Stroede one of the main pillars of CRM is communication. The Internet has always been a communication channel of choice for many people and companies.

We at Stroede have a history of sponsoring what we believe in!

Q: What are the biggest challenges facing companies within Customer Relationship Management?

A: CRM is simply nothing other than good business instincts. The biggest challenge for companies in the CRM area is to change focus from mainstream short-term, cost-centric thinking to culturing long-term and beneficial relationships. This entails a vertical change of thinking in many organizations.

That's our biggest challenge today.
